English full-back Martha Harris has left Manchester United after 4 years, and rumours are now emerging that link her with a move to Liverpool or Leicester City. Before playing for the Red Devils, Martha played for Liverpool between 2014 and 2018, so it isn’t a surprise that she’s being linked to a move back.
Leicester City survived by the skin of their teeth, with just 2 points, so it’s unsurprising that they are trying to strengthen. Martha Harris would definitely improve their back line, with the Foxes needing some WSL experience to keep them afloat and eventually to push on to maintaining mid-table finishes.
Martha Harris only played 1 WSL match this season and has only played 19 times out of a possible 58, so you can see why she may want a move away. With her contract with the Red Devils set to expire, you can see why she decided it was time to move on.
But where is Martha Harris’ next adventure?
LEICESTER CITY
Leicester City are a team who are looking to push on in the women’s game despite only being acquired by their men’s team in 2020. However, they were an ambitious club who had been steadily rising up the divisions and were sitting in a midtable Championship position. But the funding got them to the WSL and helped them stay there, so they really are looking for that next level of talent.
Martha Harris could be a perfect fit. After Esme de Graaf left the club, they really need another defensive face in there. CJ Bott can play at left-back, but if she doesn’t hit the ground running at the King Power, then they’ll need another option. Martha Harris would help with this. If CJ Bott does well, then they’ll need a versatility option who can help them move players around for rest. Martha Harris would help with this too.
Harris’ former teammate Abbie McManus left Manchester United to move to Leicester last year, after similar issues with game time. If McManus could convince Martha Harris to make the same move she did, Leicester City will be in a better position to survive next season, and even start to progress up the table.
LIVERPOOL
As previously mentioned, Martha Harris played for Liverpool for 4 years, helping them win a WSL title. However, Liverpool got relegated to the Championship in 2019/20, but they will be coming back up to the top flight for the 22/23 season. But could someone who signed for them nearly a decade ago come back?
Well, Matt Beard, the coach that signed her has since returned to the club and seeing as brought the glory days to the red half of Merseyside, he may try to bring back a few of his players to reinstill the culture they had. Martha Harris could be one of them, and it would make sense, as that is where she has played the most football, and Beard has a player who he knows is good enough and fits his style. Win-win?
