Watford winger, Ismaila Sarr, who was a primary target for Liverpool last summer transfer window, could be available for cheaper ahead of the 2021/22 season. The Senegalese star attracted significant interest from the Reds, however, an initial fee of £40m was too expensive for them to splurge. Instead, Jurgen Klopp’s side added to their forward line by signing Diogo Jota from Wolves.
According to Athletic reporter, James Pearce, Sarr will be available for “a bit cheaper” this season. Watford are currently second-placed in the Championship, and with just 5 matchdays left they look destined for a return to the top division next season. Sarr has played a key role in the Hornets’ success, with 22 goal contributions (12 goals + 10 assists) in his 36 Championship appearances. His recent form has been especially notable, with 4 goals and an assist in his last 5 starts.
Should Liverpool sign Ismaila Sarr?
To me, a move for Sarr wouldn’t be the best move for Jurgen Klopp, unless he is available at a real bargain of a price. Despite his impressive stats, there are players like Leeds United‘s Raphinha who would be available at a similar price-point. Liverpool are more likely to target a traditional centre-forward given Roberto Firmino’s failure to contribute regularly with goals.
However, if Liverpool fails to make the top four this season, the dynamics could drastically change. The likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane could be tempted to leave to a different club. In case this does happen, Sarr will be on Liverpool’s radar again.
