Left-back, Matt Targett, is set to be offered a new contract for his impressive displays for Aston Villa. The Englishman who signed for Dean Smith’s side in 2019 for a transfer fee of £14m has improved significantly in his 2 years at the Premier League club.

Targett has appeared 62 times for the Villans, starting every single Premier League game this season. He signed a four-year contract in 2019, but his steady rise in performances and importance in the team means that he is set to be offered an even better contract than the one he’s signed to now.

According to The Athletic, the move to offer Matt Targett a new contract is in line with their practice of rewarding their best performers with new contracts. Just like they have done for Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings, John McGinn, and Ezri Konsa earlier this season.

Matt Targett’s improvements have attracted praise from his ex-colleagues at Southampton, including James Ward-Prowse. Ward-Prowse said, “A new challenge came for him and he has gone there and worked hard and sustained himself in the Aston Villa team, and I am pleased to see him doing so well.

His manager, Dean Smith, even said that his performances this season may have caught the eye of England manager, Gareth Southgate. Smith said, “I think he will have been impressed with Matt Targett, who is having a fantastic season, as well.”

What next for Matt Targett?

Signing the new contract would be the most obvious move for the 25-year-old. He can reach even higher levels in what looks like an exciting project that Dean Smith has built at Aston Villa. There haven’t been any reports of a top English club chasing Targett, so progressing at Villa would be the ideal way to see if this could happen in the future.
