There was almost a certainty around the end of last season that Pep Guardiola would leave Manchester City as he hasn’t been at a club for any longer in his managerial career. However, he decided to extend and rebuild the project, not something many would have expected from the Spaniard but yet, he took upon the biggest challenge of his career, barring winning the Champions League.
Manchester City didn’t get off to a great start as they struggled for wins and were surprisingly struggling for goals. This struggle was a consequence of the new ideology that Pep Guardiola was trying to instil in his City team. The Cityzens have always been known for their attacking prowess under Guardiola’s regime with players like Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling at the forefront of what has been an exemplary display of attacking football by City in recent years. However, the former Barcelona man has done things differently this year with his focus primarily lying in solidifying his team’s defense and then building upon it.
In fact, Manchester City are the Premier League’s best side in terms of their defensive record with just 13 goals conceded in 15 matches. However, inspite of their heroics in defense, City looked lost for attacking threats, though, against Chelsea Pep Guardiola and Manchester City looked back to their best. The Manchester giants humbled their opponents and looked back in top form with an even fighter defense.
With Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool struggling to replicate their form from last season, this might just be Guardiola’s season again after City were seen as the dark horses for the most part of the season until now. Pep Guardiola has always had his team’s play sumptuous football, however, this time they’re looking genuinely like a team which is playing to win titles.
