Chelsea’s Italian midfielder, Jorginho, was highly linked to leave the Blues this summer but he did end up staying at Stamford Bridge rejecting offers from likes of Arsenal, PSG and multiple Italian clubs. Now the man who looked out of favour for the Blues, is set to sign a new contract for the club.
Jorginho, 28, signed for Chelsea in 2018 for £57.4 million, when he accompanied Maurizio Sarri to London, from Napoli. He was surely the main man of the Sarri ball playing 37 out of 38 league games in the season 2018-19. But after Sarri was sacked the very next season, he was expected to not get much of playing time under a new manager. However, he did impress Frank enough as he did feature in 31 games in season 2019-20. He was also appointed the Vice Captain by Frank but tables did turn up for him as he was not even in the 20 man squad once the season did restart after the pandemic break.
Since then he was linked to various clubs and this summer looked to be the time he would certainly leave, after speculations of Declan Rice to Chelsea being stronger than ever. However, no move did materialize for him even after Arsenal looking strong favorites to sign him.
Now things seem completely changed as the Blues look to offer him a new contract. This is what no one saw coming as his previous contract is not due to expire and runs till 2023. But new contract would end up increasing his wages a bit from the existing £110,000-a-week and also add two additional years committing him to Chelsea until 2025. The deal is expected to be signed before the end of this week.
This season he has already netted for Chelsea thrice from the penalty spot and is also looking good playing long balls creating goal scoring opportunities.
