Chelsea have spent surplus this window after not being able to spend in the previous two transfer windows. They have already boasted up their attack with the addition of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim ZIyech. But the main problem has been Chelsea’s defense in the season 2019-20 as they leaked 54 goals in the 38 games of the Premier League which is the worst among the top 10 teams.
They got in Thiago Silva on a free transfer along with €50m signing of Leicester City left back Ben Chilwell to strengthen the defense. However, the key position Chelsea need to solidify is the goalkeeping position. Kepa, the most expensive keeper, was the most underperforming player for the Blues last season. So Chelsea has been in the market looking for a new goalkeeper and after many rumours did settle for Rennes’ keeper Edouard Mendy.
Edouard Mendy, standing 6’5 ft tall, is well known to get early on crosses and tipped to be the second best keeper in the Ligue 1. He would be loking to challenge Kepa for the starting spot. According to many reliable sources, the deal has already gone through with a fee of around £18 M with add ons agreed with Marina having played her magic to reduce the initial £30 M fee as expected by Rennes.
However, when everything looked sorted for Chelsea and fans expecting for the official announcement, there seems to be a hindrance in the deal. Rennes are now looking to involve Fikayo Tomori as a part of the deal, thus wanting the young English center back on loan. However, Tomori who was earlier tipped to join Everton on loan, would not look to move to France for a new challenge. Chelsea might also keep him at the club so that he can learn from a leader like Thiago Silva in the mix. Many have also reported of Mendy to be back at Rennes’ training. This could be a huge push back to Chelsea as the deal almost looked certain and more delay could be problematic with the new season already started.
Chelsea will now have to get the deal sorted with the French club as personal agreement with the player never looked to be a problem.
