According to The Athletic, Rennes have been reported to be in talks with Chelsea to take Fikayo Tomori on loan for next season.
The defender signed a new five-year contract at the Stamford Bridge last year after his impressive performances at the beginning of the just concluded season.
The 22-year-old had his breakthrough campaign last season, having previously spent some time on loan with Hull City, Derby County and Brighton.
Since the turn of the year, Tomori have had a very difficult 2020, after featuring in just one Premier League match, which was against Bournemouth in the 2 – 2 draw on February 29.
The England international started both FA Cup matches against Nottingham Forest and Hull City, while scoring in the latter, but has since lost his starting berth to Rudiger, Christensen and Kurt Zouma whom were often being picked ahead of him.
Rumour had earlier have it that Tomori’s absence was due to his inconsistent performances and mistakes but that haven’t been wiped away from Chelsea’s defenders, considering Rudiger’s continuous mistakes, likewise Christensen’s unimpressive performances.
With Chelsea refusing to activate their buy back clause in Nathan Ake’s contract, which gave Manchester City the breakthrough in signing the former Bournemouth defender, Chelsea’s likelihood of letting Tomori to leave the Blues on loan or in a permanent deal looks unreal, as Frank Lampard will be left with limited options to choose from.
Considering his lack of a regular playing time at Chelsea, there may be considerations for the best of his development.
