In the event of finding a long-term solution to Manchester United’s goalkeeping back-up problem, Leicester City’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been identified as a potential summer transfer target for the Red Devils.
The 33-year-old former Manchester City’s goalkeeper and son of Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel has played an integral role in Leicester’s success over recent years, which has enthralled the Red Devils and they are believed to be pondering on an offer for the Denmark international goalkeeper amid criticism aimed at the increasingly error-prone Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.
There have been uncertainty over whether Sheffield United loanee Dean Henderson is ready to step up on a full-time basis, but the experience, pedigree and instant impact that Kasper Schmeichel brings, will increase United’s willingness to sign The Foxes’ goalkeeper.
According to his former Manchester City team-mate Mikkel Bischoff, he opined that Kasper would jump at the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“United will certainly not be deterred by his age of 33 years,” he told Ekstra Bladet. “The most successful goalkeepers at the club in recent years have been well into their thirties.
“He can easily play three or four good years there. Schmeichel is a huge United fan. He always has been and always will be, it will be the biggest dream come true if he were to succeed. If Kasper gets the opportunity to play just ten games for United, then he jumps. It’s simply so big for him. He is such a big fan that he will do anything to get to that club.”
During the just concluded season, Kasper Schmeichel kept 13 clean sheets in 38 league matches, conceding just 41 goals, making 96 saves and saving two penalties during the campaign.
His quality, techniques and consistency will surely put him in United’s top list for a summer move.
