On 18 June 2020, it was announced that Timo Werner has completed a move to Premier League club Chelsea F.C, who activated his £47.5 Million release clause, signing a five year deal. This move came after months of speculation that Liverpool F.C were the front runners to sign the RB Leipzig forward. And he is worth the hype with the German International scoring 33 goals and providing 10 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions.

So now the question on everyone’s mind is how the Chelsea Boss Frank Lampard is going to fit a player of Timo Werner’s quality into his starting XI. There are four ways that he can go for:

Timo Plays As A Lone Striker:

Chelsea currently use a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 system which requires to have a single striker upfront. This season Werner’s attacking output has been excellent. He is third for goals overall and also third for goals&assists combined in Europe’s top five leagues. It will probably make sense if Lampard will want to play him as a lone striker. When the metrics are compared for Tammy Abhraham and Timo Werner, the former Vfb Sttugart striker clearly outshines him in all of them.

Tammy can offer a different proposition altogether coming from the bench. He is good header of the ball & a penalty box poacher but he is less quick and relies on his physicality. Due to this he can be a excellent Plan B for Chelsea.

Timo Plays In A Front Two:

Julian Nagelsmann during the course of this season has used Werner as a slightly deeper forward in the front two, with Werner often drifting towards the left flank and taking defenders on and Lampard has expressed his desire to use both players and Tammy is capable of performing the same duties as Yussuf Poulsen. Poulsen’s ability to play aerial game and create space for Werner are some of the strengths of the Chelsea Academy graduate.

Timo Can Play of the Left:

Werner is a right footed forward and he scores & creates chances from his left foot and this will allow Lampard to play him of the left especially with the incoming Hakim Ziyech playing on his preferred right side of the attack. But this would mean leaving Christian Pulisic on the bench after having a season in which he has scored and assisted every 137 minutes in all competitions. His style of playing is similar to Werner, either linking with the striker or taking a shot from inside the box. He is just 21-years-old and has the potential to improve remarkably.

Timo can play with Pulisic, Ziyech & Abraham At The Same Time:

This will mean Chelsea ditch the 4-3-3/3-4-3 formation and adopt playing the 4-4-2 formation in which they can use a diamond midfield as variation alongside the traditional one. In that case Jorginho would be the most likely victim as Kante & Kovacic will be preferred for their defensive abilities & high energy on the field. The Chelsea vice-captain has shown previously that he cannot play in a two-man midfield as effectively as the way plays in a three man midfield.
