Sheffield United have impressed everyone with their displays in the Premier League this season. Having been promoted this season, they have played as though they always belonged at the top. They are well on their way to proving that money is not everything in football.
A wonderful season till now
Sheffield United have truly been united in their mission to stay in the Premier League. They have taken everyone by surprise with the way they have played in the top flight. Not only have they managed to get themselves in the top half of the table, but they have done so with aplomb. Many of the promoted teams prefer to play safe, at least until they find their feet in this league, but Sheffield have stuck to their own brand of football.
The Blades play some wonderful and attractive football; holding onto the ball and engineering some beautiful passing moves. And this is not just against smaller clubs either; they absolutely outclassed Arsenal when the two clubs met a few weeks ago. Arsenal have an identity as a free-flowing, beautiful game-playing club, however it was Sheffield that was the team in control when they met. Controlling the ball and playing around the Arsenal players, Sheffield did to Arsenal, what Arsenal usually do to others.
This brave and expansive football of theirs was rewarded with a win over the North London club. Sheffield now sit 7th in the league table, above the likes of Arsenal and Spurs.
Another impressive feat that Sheffield have held on to so far to only couple of losses away from home in hands of Liverpool & Manchester City. Now that is simply fantastic for a club that has just been promoted to the best league in the world.
Minimal spending on transfers
They are going beyond just staying in the league, they are challenging for the European spots. All this after having spent just £40 million in the transfer window before the start of the season. A major chunk of the total money spent went into three signings, namely, Oliver McBurnie from Swansea for £16 million, Lys Mousset from Bournemouth for £9.4 million and Callum Robinson from Preston for £6.6 million. In the modern era of football, this is peanuts when compared to what Premier League teams spend in the transfer windows. Just to put matters into perspective, Arsenal spent almost £130 million, although some of the transfer fees will be paid in the following few years.
So as you can see, Sheffield United spent a whopping £90 million less than Arsenal and yet they sat above the North Londoners in the table with 25 points at one point, while Arsenal have recovered to bridge the gap to only three points.
Although the difference between the two is just 3 points at the moment, it is imperative to understand that they are showing a much better away form than Arsenal, and in fact, a lot of teams, while also playing some attractive, eye-pleasing football. A lot of credit has to go to their manager Chris Wilder, who has shown he has the acumen to make waves in the top flight as well.
All in all, Sheffield are showing the footballing world that money is not the most important asset in the sport. Having spent conservatively, they are still competing with the best and keeping themselves near the top. Sheffield United are setting a wonderful example for the smaller clubs in England- you need not spend a ton of money to be competitive.
